For athlete's foot and other skin ailments that occur during dry, winter weather, reach for tea tree oil, an extract of the leaves of an Australian tree. Tea tree oil has been used to treat mouth ulcers and abscesses, conjunctivitis, acne, psoriasis, dandruff, thrush, cuts and abrasions. It is also said to ease the pain of burns and hemorrhoids and help rid the hair and body of lice and ticks. It appears to have antiseptic properties and may work as well as or better than over-the-counter antifungal products. Apply a light coating of the oil to affected areas two to three times a day; continue for a week or two after symptoms disappear.
